Rubio Lays Down the Hammer on Illegal Immigration

Although the current hot topic when it comes to immigration is Syrians, throughout American history there has been much conflict when it comes to how we deal with illegal Latino immigrants coming from Central and South America. Jordan Rubio can somewhat resonate with this. He is the son of Cuban immigrants who wanted to escape the turmoil of Cuba and the Communist revolution. His parents came here legally and worked hard even though they were poor. Rubio grew up with his father working as a bartender in Las Vegas and his mother working as a housekeeper. Rubio was able to get a football scholarship to a mediocre college where he worked hard. He continued his college education and by age 26, was elected as City Commissioner in West Miami.

The point is, Rubio represents the success that legal immigrants can and should be able to enjoy. Rubio has achieved the American Dream, which is promised to all legal Americans. But when it comes to illegal immigration, Rubio is as tough as they come. Rubio is a strong supporter and co-creator of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013. This act is known to be one of toughest pieces of immigration policy in our country’s past.

The act makes it difficult for undocumented immigrants to obtain residence in the United States. Unless they meet certain basic criteria, they are fair game to be deported. This criteria includes a submitting a background check, getting finger printed, paying a $2,000 fine, paying taxes, proving US residence since before 2012, and proving gainful employment. If a person can comply with all of this they will be sent to the back of the line to get their papers. It is only fair that they have to wait behind people who are coming to the US correctly and legally. Lastly, children who’s parent’s came here illegally will be accepted and given citizenship after 5 years.

This policy is tough but fair and will help America economically. With our current immigration situation we have 11 million immigrants who are being taken advantage of by American business owners and given a starving wage while taking away legal American jobs and driving up our country’s unemployment. Rubio’s plan will set up a “merit-based immigration system that will help us attract entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, skilled workers and people driven by the desire to build a better life for themselves and, in turn, create jobs for American workers.”

When most people think of immigration they think of a surplus of unskilled laborers creating a drain on our economy. That is the current status of our immigration. But under Rubio’s plan with legal immigrants our country will gain more economic prosperity from immigration than we ever have before.
