Respondents disagree with Rubio and Sanders on Education Reforms

Grand Old Publication conducted a poll this past week. The poll included several questions ranging from topics as abortion, to illegal immigration, to the current threat of ISIS. Regarding the comments made in the last presidential debate about education, it is clear that the population does not agree with either candidate.

To the question “what is the purpose of education?” 76.47% of respondents answer that education was a means to improve oneself, compared to the remainder 23.53% who believe that education is a means to get a degree and later on build personal finances. This statement corresponds with Jordan Rubio’s educational reform proposals. The republican candidate aims to demote liberal arts colleges and create educational programs that would narrow down the knowledge of their students. Rubio entices his audience claiming this programs would exist to encourage personal economic growth and create a stronger middle class. What is being disregarded is that these programs would not allow students to gather a basic knowledge in different fields. Someone who aims to prepare for a mechanic job will not have the opportunity to educate him/herself on politics, for example. The independence that defines the citizens of the United States would be shattered, for individuals would only possess knowledge on a narrow field and would be led to blindly trust and depend on others.

On the other hand, 88.24% of respondents believes that the national government should not have too much power over our lives, and 5.88% believe it should have none. These results contradict Sanders’ support on the Common Core. The educational program would allow the national government to determine what is important and necessary to learn in schools. Needless is to say, that the program would thrust the power of the national government to dictatorial levels.

The two candidates have to step-up their game about education. Sanders and Rubio have to recognize the big gap between the population’s views and their agendas.
