Americans Safety at Risk?

The first debate of the 2016 presidential general campaign, between the Republican, Jordan Rubio, and the Democrat, self-styled 'Socialist', Rebecca Sanders, began to shed light on the key issues of this campaign cycle. Candidates were asked questions on foreign policy, education, immigration, police brutality, and climate change.

During the debate, Jordan Rubio projected a humble confidence without stumbling into the George W. trap of appearing innocently overmatched. He spoke in clear language that all could understand, while demonstrating a grasp on the complexities of geo-politics. Rebecca Sanders, on the other hand, while also appearing confident in her positions tended to resort to highfaluting language that might be construed as either over-estimating the general populations vocabulary, or using such language as a way to appear intelligent while hiding a shallow understanding of the world and its many dangers.

On combatting ISIS, both candidates seem to admit that war is imminent. When asked if they support the current efforts to fight the terrorist group, they each claimed that they do, although they differ on their plans for a future war.

Senator Rubio called to, “send our US air-troops into Syria and monitor [the terrorists.]” Further, he claimed that, “we need to go there and solve this problem...we need to send our troops over there before the problem comes to America.” Additionally, Rubio proposed a continuation of the funding of non-ISIS rebels, saying that the US should, “also provide funding for Sunni's who are not part of ISIS...so they can protect themselves and prevent future threats.”

Senator Sanders reiterated her support of a coalition to lead the fight, “we need to make sure that we are not the only ones fighting.” She added that the US is spending sufficient funds on the military, “we do not need to spend any more money on the military...the problem isn't how much money we're spending but how we spend it.”

The candidates were asked what a war with ISIS would look like considering that they are not a distinct national entity but rather a group of people. Sanders underwhelming response: “I think war would consist of us being very very careful.” Rubio on the other hand, seemed to grasp the scope of the threat, speaking in a suddenly forceful tone, “If we handle ISIS like [Sanders wants] the threat will come to America...we need to act immediately so they do not effect our youth.”

Finally, the candidates address the Syrian immigration crisis. Sanders, in typical sensitive Liberal fashion, claimed that, “if we do not welcome Syrian refugees, we will be creating more enemies. She added, perhaps ignoring the repeated decapitation of Westerners by Syrian terrorists, that, “if this is a humanitarian crisis we must start acting like humans.” Sanders also expressed confidence in the current vetting process for new immigrants, while dismissing the very real fear that America will be welcoming people who mean to do us harm into the country.

Rubio, speaking for most Americans, claimed that he “loves these people [Syrian refugees]” while also saying that, “there is no way to tell who is entering our country and who is not...we have no way of knowing their intentions.”

While Sanders may be correct in claiming that most of the Syrian refugees are simply trying to find safety, she does not seem to respect the safety of her own country. The safety and freedom of Americans must come first. She is not running to be president of Jordan (which she cited as an

exemplary humanitarian country!), she is running to become president of the United States. Rubio understands the threats abroad while desiring the continued freedom of Americans. Rather than allowing thousands of potential terrorists into the country, Rubio wants to learn who it is that is actually coming in. He does not want to bar the 'huddled masses' from the country but rather wants to welcome those who desire to be part of the tradition of freedom, not those who want to destroy it.
