Presidential candidates for the 2016 election, Jordan Rubio (R) and Rebecca Sanders (D), marked Wednesday, November 11th in their calendars for their first press conference. The session although short, was quite informative.
Sanders and her press secretary entered the stage with frowns. It did not take long for Sanders to commandeer the stage with her expectations for the presidency. Sanders reflected on previously made promises for expanding social services, such as free college tuition, and deterring climate change. Sanders attempted to entice the lower and middle socio-economic classes with promises, just like the pied piper of Hamelin played his pipe for the children in town. This music for the ears of the majority, however, did not take long to get off-key.
Sanders claimed that the hard earn salaries of the higher classes would be taxed during her presidency. The funds gathered would be redistributed to education, healthcare and other social policies. When asked about the repercussions these types of policies would have on the American spirit of potential and existing business men and women, Sanders claimed that these laws would not “touch them much”. From past discourses, however, we all know the war against the upper classes that Sanders has started and the hatred toward them that she has ignited. She has now presented two opposing visions: on the one hand, she desires to demolish the accomplishments of the upper classes and hand them to others whose inaction might have otherwise never led them to that wealth. On the other hand, Sanders claims that the affluence of the upper class will not decrease abundantly –in fact, it will only decrease slightly. Sanders leaves the audience perplexed before such a paradoxical attitude to her past claims.
Furthermore, Sanders mentioned her plan to increase government funding (an alias for another increase in taxes) to stop climate change. The democratic candidate repeats and emphasizes the protection of the middle and lower socio-economic classes. However, she is willing to destroy a large industry and to compromise the jobs of thousands of workers in this industry, only because Earth is experiencing a fluctuation of temperature, a natural phenomenon.
Sanders did not only show contradiction in her own beliefs, but in the spirit and ideals of her country. Senator Sanders’ ideals threaten the economic liberty and the independence of American citizens.
After Sanders’ appearance, Jordan Rubio brought light to the scene. He received the press with warmth and affection. His language, contrary to Sanders’, was positive and inspiring, filled with words such as opportunity, reform, and prayers for the future of the country. Furthermore, Rubio conquered the heart of many Spanish-speaking citizens when he addressed the audience in his mother language.
Rubio proved to be the embodiment of the American Dream during this press conference. He talked about the hardships that his family went through; son of two Cuban immigrants who remained in the lower socio-economic classes, Rubio has managed to step up from their position and be a presidential candidate for the 2016 election. This is the American Dream that Rubio aims to revive. “Who, or where you come from does not determine your success” Rubio claims. His plan is to work for the youth: create a guaranteed future for children by providing more scholarships, discarding the normativity of student debt. The candidate argues that this path will aid businesses and therefore guarantee the opportunity of the middle and lower classes to have a bright future. Rubio talked about world economics as well. He showed concern about the economic future of the country and its role globally. Rubio considers necessary to establish good relationships with China, for it is an emerging world dominant economy. Establishing strong ties with the Asian country would allow for the U.S. to maintain a good world economic standing.
Jordan Rubio finished his statements with a clear sign of patriotism and love for this country: “God bless America”.
